The Met Steps: 2023 Best Looks

by Samara Morris

As fashion enthusiasts eagerly await the annual Met Gala, one of the biggest events in the fashion industry, the anticipation for the best-dressed list is at an all-time high. This year's Met Gala, themed "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty," saw some of the most iconic celebrities from across the globe bring their A-game to the red carpet.

From elegant and timeless designs to bold and daring fashion statements, the fashion-forward looks left everyone in awe. The fashionistas showcased their unique sense of style, making it difficult to pick just a few for the best-dressed list. Nonetheless, here are some of the most remarkable looks from last night's Met Gala that took the fashion world by storm.

RIHANNA in a bridal-esque white Valentino ensemble featuring a flower-adorned cape, dramatic train and false eyelash-adorned sunglasses.

At the Met Gala, all eyes are on Rihanna, who has made memorable entrances in previous years. Her outfits range from a Maison Margiela Artisanal ensemble inspired by the pope at the 2018 "Heavenly Bodies" gala to a petal-covered Comme des Garçons dress at the 2017 "Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons" ball.

KIM KARDASHIAN in Schiaparelli

A reality star and entrepreneur known for her eye-catching Met Gala ensembles, this year's outfit left us amazed. The draped beads, ornate choker, and white coat made the perfect combination, and the corset accentuates her Barbie-like waist, which may have been intentional.

DUA LIPA in Chanel

As one of the hosts of the Met Gala 2023, the "Sweetest Pie" singer and upcoming Barbie movie co-star showcased her look for the evening. The striking Tiffany pendant takes center stage, but we believe that the fashion should be the highlight of the night.

ANOK YAI in Prabal Gurung

To praise a model's look on a red carpet almost seems unfair because they can work any outfit with ease. However, this Prabal Gurung gown on the model is truly captivating. She flawlessly displays the dress's unique qualities, making it clear that the two are a perfect match.

JENNA ORTEGA in Thom Browne

The actor from "The Addams Family adaptation, Wednesday" thrilled us in a Thom Browne ensemble that merged Gothic, Flamenco, and Mexican design elements, using Chanel's signature tweeds and pearls. The outfit honors Karl Lagerfeld, fashion, and even the famous Wednesday dance performed by Ortega.

DOJA CAT in Oscar de la Renta

Before Jared Leto stole the show with his cat costume, attention was drawn to the “Get Into It (Yuh)” singer's amusing tribute to Karl Lagerfeld's beloved pet, Choupette. The tribute was witty and endearing, and we believe it would have pleased Lagerfeld.

ANNE HATHAWAY in Atelier Versace

While we could scrutinize certain details, such as the floral bust, it's undeniable that this is a stunningly seductive and vintage-inspired ensemble crafted to capture attention. Moreover, it's a brilliant amalgam of two legendary designs: the renowned Versace safety pin dress and the iconic Chanel tweed.

JESSICA CHASTAIN in Gucci

This look is a playful and glamorous take on the iconic Karl Lagerfeld black suit, black gloves, and white hair look. It could easily be named "Karlina Lagerfeld" if it were a drag queen. Although some may consider it slightly costume-like, we found it to be charming and admired how effortlessly she pulled it off.

09

NICOLE KIDMAN in Chanel

Although this striking gown worn in a 2004 Chanel No. 5 film is stunning, we didn't quite agree with the styling decisions. The dress deserves a different hairstyle (high pony, maybe), which she looks great in, and the black sandals are too heavy and focus-pulling for such an ethereal, flowy gown.

HALLE BAILEY in Gucci

Halle Bailey made a stunning appearance on the red carpet of the 2023 Met Gala in New York, exuding a princess-like aura. The rising Disney star turned heads with her show-stopping ensemble for the highly-anticipated annual event held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

CARDI B in Chenpeng Studio ball gown

Cardi B’s look for the 2023 Met Gala is consistent with her history of bold and attention-grabbing outfits. This year's theme, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty," called for attendees to honor the late designer by replicating his black-and-white uniform or wearing a piece from one of the fashion houses he helmed. Cardi B met the challenge with her selection of a sculptural gown by Chenpeng Studio, featuring a corseted bodice, 3D rose embellishments on the skirt, and a sleeveless collared top with a black tie, a subtle nod to Lagerfeld's signature uniform.
