Is it a jinx? It seems to be a pattern for family shows to fall from grace once they either change their name or move networks.
Keeping Up With the Kardashians saw much success for over a decade, but once they transitioned to Hulu and rebranded as The Kardashians, their relevancy declined, and more and more fans began to turn away from the reality TV family. Could the same thing be happening with the Braxton sisters?
There’s no doubt that Braxton Family Values was a successful reality TV show, but there were many discrepancies and disagreements between the sisters and the network regarding their pay. Most notably, Tamar Braxton, who in July 2020 tweeted, “Are we going to talk about pay… I 100% wrote the theme song, where is the coin? Our show is on Netflix, where is the coin? 10 years on the air, we make 75% less than the Kardashians. How come there are no villains on that show?”

The Kardashians are very strategic when it comes to their show. As executive producers, they can make final decisions about editing and how they are portrayed. This makes sense, considering they have cemented themselves in the fashion industry and proven to be successful business owners. The show is one giant commercial and a way for them to earn a lucrative income that they can then recycle into their businesses—the show also being one of those ventures.
Many fans continue to question why the seasons, since airing on Hulu and receiving so much negative feedback, continue to get renewed. Well, it’s their money that’s doing the talking. Money from the business goes into the show, and money from the show goes into the business. Brands will always support them as long as they remain on our television screens. With that being said, don’t expect them to go away anytime soon.

But while viewers dislike the Kardashians because they’re boring now, viewers seem to dislike the Braxton's for another reason. The all-American family who would harmonize gospel songs and became America’s family is now filled with dysfunction—so much so that the sisters have gone through several therapists, failed music careers, failed businesses, and now, with the loss of their sister Tracy, fans expected the Braxton's to return more united than ever before. Instead, we got the complete opposite. Not to mention, Towanda and Trina are entering their villain era, where fans now believe the two sisters are turning their nephew against his father.
“I watched the most recent episode where Kevin Jr. is speaking to the family attorney, and I was so appalled by the disrespect he displayed on national television towards his father,” Lisa K. Stephenson shares. “His father raised him and was married, present, and living in the home with his mother for 30+ years. If anything, he should have respect for him.

Both Towanda and Trina should be ashamed of themselves for upholding that kind of language and disrespect towards an adult. Not only that, but when Tamar made remarks towards Andre during the time that he and Towanda were together, she did not like it; she did not tolerate it. So why is speaking about Kevin Sr. in such a horrendous manner allowed or accepted? The difference is Towanda divorced Andre; Tracy stayed with Kevin Sr. He deserves respect, especially from his son.”
Kevin Jr. said during a scene with his aunt Trina and their attorney, speaking of his father, “…I was born into this family, you married into this family,” to which Trina followed up by praising her nephew. It’s one thing to support your nephew through his grieving process, but upholding such arrogant behavior is just taking things too far.

Fans of the show expected the Braxton's to return united and polished, not looking to exploit their deceased sister and her family for a payday—the same payday Tamar mentioned five years ago was inadequate. So, was it worth it? Fans are not looking forward to the remainder of the season, and that is unfortunate. We are all choosing to hold onto the Braxton's when they had their values, and their morals were front and center.
