Print Exclusive: Jazz Anderson On Creativity, Music and Public Criticism

In an industry dominated by trends and virality, Jazz Anderson stands out from the crowd.

Authentic and powerful, she’s carving out her own unique identity and resonating with fans everywhere. Her story is compelling and goes beyond the borders of the music industry. We sat down with the exceedingly talented and accomplished rapper, actress, and TV personality to discuss all things music, acting, and love.


Ever since she was young, Jazz Anderson knew she was meant to pave her own path and make a name for herself. Beginning with her devotion to and love for music, basketball, and creativity, Anderson has always aimed for the stars. “My passion for writing and music has been a part of me since I was in middle school. A lot of people don’t know that I actually wanted to go to USC to attend their film program because I wanted to be a filmmaker before an artist.


Anything creative that allows me to be expressive and imaginative will always be my first choice. Writing took a backseat to my love for basketball, but when I got injured playing college basketball, I took it as a message from God that I should put my all into my music because people often said I conveyed an uplifting and inspirational message through my songs.”


But the road wasn’t always easy. With her family in the public eye since she was a teenager, Anderson knows all too well the struggles of public criticism and judgment. Both her father, NBA star Kenny Anderson, and her mother, actress and TV personality Tami Roman, launched their family into stardom in the 90s.


“Jumping into the music industry was difficult because the talent was there and the doors were open, but public opinion felt as though I was trying to take the easy way out by not picking a profession that required college or a degree. People felt as though I was riding my celebrity parents’ coattails, not understanding that I’ve always been a poet before I was ever on television. Preconceived notions and judgment can be hard to override, but that’s why I stay consistent and grounded through God.”


Despite her parents’ fame, Anderson chose to build her career through hard work and a persistent drive to express herself. It is evident that even after all these years, Anderson remains humble and poised—still just as genuine as when she got her start as a young teen. Through it all, she has stayed true to herself, despite any struggles along the way.

Daring and resilient are just two words that describe this multifaceted star. “The highs and lows, and the yeses and nos, made me develop tough skin as well as a heart of persistence, which I appreciate. I like to call it a beautiful roller coaster. I am grateful for every win and every loss because it only made me a better artist and person when it comes to my mindset.”


Anderson’s music, a blend of catchy beats and sharp lyricism, reflects an extensive understanding of self-growth, life, and love. So how does she go about making her music? We asked the skillful rapper what her process is like and what inspires her. “I always go into the studio with a fresh mind. I like to bring the microphone out of the booth and move it into the open space with the engineer and producer so we can all feed off each other’s energies.


The producer will most likely make a beat from scratch, and depending on where the beat takes me, I will then start writing on my iPad or iPhone notepad… I don’t use a pen and pad; I use my phone. Different beats evoke different emotions in me, so I always need to have the beat first so I know what I’d like to talk about.”
